Green Up Your Act – Natural History Workshops

Green Up Your Act inspires young people to connect with nature through hands-on environmental education. Using local parks, school grounds and community green spaces as outdoor classrooms, our workshops help participants discover, identify and care for the wildlife and habitats around them.

Inspired by the Natural History GCSE, our programme develops nature literacy through practical activities that build confidence, curiosity and environmental responsibility. As participants explore their local environment, they develop scientific observation skills, learn about habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity, understand how landscapes shape wildlife, express their creativity through nature-inspired art, and discover the benefits of nature for health and wellbeing. Practical projects also encourage design, problem-solving and teamwork.

What We Explore

• Local wildlife and habitats
• Biodiversity and conservation
• Trees, plants, birds and pollinators
• Nature journaling and observation
• Citizen science and species identification
• Climate, ecosystems and seasonal change
• Bug hotels and habitat creation

Hands-On Activities

Participants take part in a range of practical activities, including:

• Building bug hotels and wildlife habitats
• Biodiversity surveys and nature monitoring
• Guided nature walks
• Wildlife identification using iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID
• Planting for pollinators and biodiversity
• Nature art, sketching, leaf and bark rubbings
• Nature journaling, photography and seasonal observations

These activities naturally support learning across Science, Geography, Art and Design, Health and Wellbeing, Design and Technology, while developing communication, teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Green Up Your Act Nature Notebook

Participants use our 30 Nature Notes for Your Local World A6 field notebook to record observations, identify local wildlife, complete nature challenges and reflect on their discoveries. The notebook also includes space for sketches, leaf and bark rubbings, photographs, found natural materials (where appropriate), species lists and personal reflections, creating a lasting record of each participant’s journey through the natural world.

By encouraging young people to notice, name and nurture nature, Green Up Your Act helps develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to become environmental stewards and protect biodiversity for future generations.

Cross-Curricular Learning

Our workshops connect environmental education with:

  • Science
