Environmental Detectives

This extended format offers a unique way to move through a number of eco topics and creative outcomes during an extended half day session with one class. Using the Environmental Detectives format, teachers can choose a tailored series of sessions to introduce pupils to environmental issues and collectively work together to problem solve and create sustainable solutions at a pace that suits the group’s needs and interests.

Classes taking part in Environmental Detectives sessions will investigate issues such as air, river and ocean pollution, habitat destruction and sustainability in our food systems, explore solutions to these issues and complete related creative outcomes in response to the problems raised.

The benefits of being an Environmental Detective is a focus on understanding how different environmental systems are interconnected and learning about environmental impacts and solutions across issues. This extended offer encourages rich cross-curricular STEM learning and deepens pupils knowledge on a range of topics, encouraging thinking about long-term consequences of actions, environmental stewardship and responsibility.

Example options include:

Biodiversity detectives

Investigate habitats at home and across the globe ranging from urban parks to the countryside and tropical rainforests. Uncover the similarities and differences and look at solutions we can all play a part in by creating a bug hotel, rainforest awareness notebook and eco fish artwork during a morning or afternoon session.

Harvest detectives

Investigate the journeys our food takes, food waste and global farming methods. Uncover the advantages of local, seasonal eating and the joy of growing food by making seedling starter pots for seasonal veg, planting microgreens and utilising outside spaces to plant an apple, pear or plum tree.

Eco detectives

Investigate across environmental issues spanning recycling, plastic in the oceans and food miles. Uncover evidence of innovative solutions and create up-cycled notebooks, eco fish and your own harvest of micro greens during a morning or afternoon season.
