Growing Food Schools Workshops

Farm to Fork Workshop

Healthy Choices for a Healthy Planet: Food Miles, Growing and Sustainability

The workshop starts with a fun, interactive geography quiz that tests pupils’ knowledge as they discover how far different foods travel from farm to plate. Working together, they explore where different fruits and vegetables come from and follow the journey their food takes.

Pupils look at each stage of the process and the energy and resources used along the way, from growing and harvesting to transport, packaging and getting food onto our plates. They also learn about the benefits of fresh and seasonal produce, and how food miles, packaging and food waste can affect the environment.

Using food labels, pupils discover how to make informed choices about seasonal produce and consider how far their food has travelled before reaching their plate.

The workshop supports the UK National Curriculum across Science, Geography, Design & Technology and PSHE. Pupils explore where food comes from, how plants grow and develop an understanding of the journey food takes from farm to plate.

The learning is brought together through a hands-on growing activity, where pupils get the chance to experience the joy of growing their own food. They will plant their own microgreens and be shown how to make a recycled watering can, to help them care for and water their seedlings. Microgreens can be sown and harvested throughout the year, giving pupils access to fresh, nutritious food. Pupils are encouraged to look after their seedlings, enjoy them growing and continue growing more food, helping them develop an ongoing interest in growing their own fresh produce. This gives pupils a practical experience of growing their own food and understanding how simple choices can make a difference to both their health and the planet.
