Hands-on Eco Activities for Schools

Litter Fish Workshop

Cleaning Up Our World: Inspiring Responsibility for Nature and Wildlife

One of the first subjects pupils mention when it comes to environmental topics is the issue of litter. Clearing up streets and green spaces in England alone costs £1 billion a year.

This workshop supports pupils in developing an understanding of the impact of human behaviour on the environment, both locally and nationally. Pupils explore how litter affects communities, wildlife, and natural spaces, helping them to make meaningful connections between everyday actions and wider environmental consequences.

Linked to the National Curriculum for Science (living things and their habitats, environmental change), Geography (human impact on environments and sustainability), and PSHE/Citizenship (responsibility, community, and environmental stewardship), pupils investigate the effects of littering and the importance of maintaining clean and safe environments. They also consider the role of individuals and communities in reducing waste and protecting local spaces.

Through an interactive presentation, pupils examine the negative effect on animals and ecosystems. This encourages discussion, critical thinking, and awareness of how single-use plastics contribute to the problem, alongside exploration of more sustainable alternatives.

The practical activity allows pupils to consolidate their learning creatively by decorating a cork fish using recycled materials to represent scales. This hands-on task reinforces key messages around sustainability and environmental responsibility while also developing creativity. The completed artwork can be taken home or displayed in school to extend learning and raise awareness across the wider school community.
