Materials and their Properties Workshop

Materials Matter: Inspiring the Next Generation of Makers and Creators

Every great invention, building, product, and piece of technology begins with understanding materials. When young people discover the unique properties of different materials, they unlock the ability to create, design, and build almost anything they can imagine.

This engaging workshop supports the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Science curriculum, encouraging pupils to explore a range of everyday materials, investigating their properties, origins, and uses. By understanding why wood, metal, plastic, cork, paper, and cotton are chosen for specific purposes, pupils gain insight into how the world around them is designed and made. Pupils will develop their ability to identify, compare, classify, and describe materials while using scientific vocabulary to explain their observations.

From the bicycles we ride and the wind turbines that generate clean energy to the bridges we cross and the homes we live in, every object begins with a material chosen for a purpose. By exploring how different materials behave and why they are suited to particular jobs, pupils begin to think like inventors, engineers, designers, and creators. Through hands-on investigation, they will handle, identify, compare, and test different materials, developing their scientific understanding and curiosity about how things work.

When you understand the properties of materials, you can make better choices, solve problems, and bring your ideas to life.

The workshop also supports key aspects of Design and Technology, encouraging pupils to consider how materials are selected to solve problems, meet needs, and create products that are fit for purpose. Discussions around recycling and material choices help pupils make links to Sustainability, Environmental Awareness, and the wider world around them.

The workshop inspires future makers, engineers, inventors, architects, and designers by demonstrating how the materials we choose shape the world we create and how understanding them is the first step towards turning creative ideas into real-world solutions.

During the session, pupils will create their own recycled materials notebook, collecting real material samples and recording observations about their properties and uses. This practical resource can be taken back into the classroom and used to support future learning, scientific enquiry, and cross-curricular work in Science, Design and Technology, and Literacy.
