Birds use a great deal of energy to maintain a constant body temperature, which means they are always searching for energy-rich food sources. During the spring and summer months, many birds feed on insects that provide essential fat and protein. However, when winter arrives, natural food sources such as seeds become less abundant and insect populations decrease. This engaging workshop helps pupils understand the seasonal challenges faced by birds while supporting learning in Science, Biology, Habitats, Biodiversity, Environmental Awareness, and Seasonal Change.
Through discussion, visual resources, and observation, pupils explore the reasons behind the decline in UK bird populations and discover practical ways they can help protect local wildlife. By comparing contrasting bird habitats from close to home and further afield, pupils develop a greater understanding of ecosystems, food chains, adaptation, and the conditions needed for birdlife to thrive. The workshop also supports Geography, Eco-Schools, Sustainability, Citizenship, and Outdoor Learning, encouraging pupils to make meaningful connections between human activity and the natural environment.
To complete the workshop, pupils take part in a hands-on creative activity by making their own pine cone bird feeder using natural and sustainable materials. This practical session supports Art and Design, Design Technology, Fine Motor Skills, Creative Learning, and STEM education, while encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental responsibility. The finished bird feeders can be used at school or taken home, giving pupils the opportunity to observe local birds up close while helping provide an additional food source during colder months. The activity enhances outdoor spaces, encourages biodiversity, and helps enrich local habitats for birdlife, making it a rewarding and memorable experience for both teachers and pupils.
This workshops lasts 45 minutes to an hour, with up to 35 pupils in each class.
