The workshop starts by listening to the sounds of the rainforest, immediately encouraging curiosity, discussion, and sensory engagement. Pupils quickly discover that rainforests are one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, supporting learning in Geography, Science, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Sustainability, and Global Citizenship. We explore how rainforests contain two-thirds of the world’s plant and wildlife species, and how a single hectare of tropical rainforest may contain as many as 200 species of trees. Pupils also learn about the environmental impact of cattle farming, soya bean production, paper manufacture, and the removal of commercially valuable hardwoods such as teak and mahogany.
To deepen understanding, the workshop includes an engaging multimedia presentation using colourful photographs, maps, sound clips, and video footage of rainforest plants and animals. This immersive approach helps bring this unique environment to life while supporting STEM learning, environmental awareness, literacy, communication skills, and cross-curricular learning. The workshop is designed to inspire awe and wonder while encouraging pupils to think critically about the importance of protecting ecosystems around the world.
As a creative response to the topic, pupils are invited to make a unique up-cycled notebook using recycled paper and old maps. This practical activity supports Art and Design, Design Technology, Eco-Schools, sustainability education, and creative learning, while also encouraging fine motor skills, problem solving, and environmental responsibility. Each notebook is finished by printing a beautiful rainforest-inspired woodblock print onto one of the recycled pages, creating a meaningful piece of artwork that reinforces the importance of recycling, re-using materials, and helping to protect the world’s forests.
