This workshop helps pupils understand how planting trees can play an important role in tackling climate change while also creating new habitats for wildlife. It is closely linked to the UK National Curriculum, supporting learning in Science, Geography, and PSHE.
In Science, children explore how trees absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping to reduce greenhouse gases and support cleaner air. This links to the Science curriculum (Plants and Living Things), including understanding plant life processes, environmental change, and how living things depend on their habitats. In Geography, pupils consider how increasing tree cover across the UK can improve landscapes, support biodiversity, and help meet national environmental goals, linking to human impact on environments, land use, and sustainability.
Through discussion and practical learning, pupils discover how trees provide homes, food, and shelter for a wide range of wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals. As new trees are planted and nature begins to establish itself, pupils can see how ecosystems develop and become more diverse over time, supporting Science enquiry skills and environmental awareness.
The hands-on element of the session gives each pupil the opportunity to grow their own oakling, which will create a long-term personal connection to nature and supporting PSHE objectives around responsibility, care for the environment, and future citizenship.
When the oakling is ready, it can be replanted in a suitable outdoor location, giving pupils a lasting contribution to the environment. This cycle of growing, caring, and eventually planting helps reinforce key scientific concepts while building a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
