This practical workshop encourages pupils to think differently about waste and the resources we use every day. It supports learning across Science, Geography, Sustainability, Climate Change, Environmental Studies, PSHE, Citizenship and Eco-Schools.
The session begins with a discussion about everyday environmental issues at home, at school and in the wider world. Pupils explore a colourful collection of upcycled objects made from different materials, considering where they come from, how they are used and what might happen to them when they are no longer needed. A lively Q&A encourages curiosity, communication and critical thinking, with links to Global Citizenship.
Pupils then put these ideas into practice by transforming a material that might otherwise be thrown away into something useful. Using a Tetra Pak juice carton, they create a practical wallet while discovering how its layers of cardboard, plastic and aluminium can be repurposed. The activity develops skills in Design & Technology, STEM, problem solving and creative learning, while demonstrating the potential of materials that are often treated as waste.
The workshop leaves pupils with a greater understanding of reuse and responsible resource use, while celebrating the creativity and satisfaction of making something useful from materials that might otherwise be discarded.
