This workshop encourages pupils to see old and unwanted materials in a new way, as something they can use, transform and turn into something useful and unique.
Through discussion, pupils explore a range of green issues at home, at school and in a global context, discovering how everyday decisions can help reduce waste and protect the Earth’s precious resources. They consider the positive impact they can have and the role they can play in caring for our planet.
Pupils are introduced to the idea of sustainable living through a virtual visit to an Earthship, an award-winning building powered by renewable energy and constructed using recycled materials. This links to Geography (sustainability and human impact on the environment) and Science (energy and materials).
They then get the opportunity to explore a fascinating collection of recycled and upcycled objects and materials from around the world, seeing how everyday items can be given a new lease of life. This inspires the main hands-on making activity, where learners design and create their own unique upcycled notebook using materials such as old maps, recycled paper and card.
The activity celebrates the joy of making things with their own hands, encouraging learners to experiment with materials, make creative choices and take pride in creating something that is both useful and aesthetically pleasing. Rather than simply throwing materials away, they discover how creativity and imagination can transform something old into something new, helping them see the potential in everyday materials and inspiring them to think creatively about what they use, make and value.
